Capablanca's debut in the international arena took place in the important San Sebastian tournament that attracted all the stars of the era, with the exception of Lasker, the reigning world champion, and Alekhine, who was still too young. “Some of the masters”,Capablanca recalled later, "objected to my inclusion … one of them was Dr. Bernstein, against whom I had the good fortune to play in the first round, and beat him in such a way.
